Northvolt

FCA member since January 2024

Northvolt was founded to enable the transition to a decarbonized future by establishing a sustainable battery industry. To do this, Northvolt is pioneering a new approach to battery manufacturing rooted in a commitment to fossil-free energy, sustainable sourcing of raw materials and recycling. The company is currently delivering batteries from its first gigafactory Northvolt Ett, in northern Sweden and from its R&D and industrialization campus Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, Sweden. Additionally, Northvolt is developing battery manufacturing capacity across three other projects, including ones in Sweden, Germany and Canada.

Founded in Stockholm in 2016, Northvolt has grown to over 5,000 people from over 120 different nationalities and has secured over $55 billion worth of contracts from key customers, including BMW, Fluence, Scania, Volkswagen, Volvo and Polestar. Northvolt is not ready to source cobalt from artisanal and small-scale mining at this stage. Convinced, however, that engagement rather than avoidance is the solution, the company intends to bring its voice and perspective to the issue through participation in the Fair Cobalt
Alliance.

“To foster a sustainable battery industry, we need sustainable raw material supply chains. Following discussions with various actors in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Northvolt is proud to deepen its engagement in the region. As a next step to support its engagement with the DRC, Northvolt has joined the Fair Cobalt Alliance. with the aim to support in the development of a more socially just mining sector. The responsible way forward for the battery industry is through the development of the DRC mining sector. Open collaboration is a vital tool in this work, and Northvolt encourages all of our stakeholders to lend their support. It will not be simple work, but it is the right and responsible path to take.”
